Full and Part Time Train Drivers/Driver Instructors/Guard Instructors

SLC Operations is recruiting for full and part time qualified drivers, driver instructors and guard instructors to support growing demand from clients throughout England and Wales, in all rail sectors.

This is an exciting time to join a licensed passenger and freight train operator and its specialist training division – The Rail Academy – as it continues to grow and support the rail industry.

To apply, drivers must hold a valid, current ETDL train driving licence and be able to demonstrate a good safety of the line record.  Driver Instructors will also hold an A1 assessor qualification (or equivalent) and be able to demonstrate a track record of training and assessing experience.

Guards must have at least 3 years of main line guarding experience, a good safety and customer service record and should have demonstrable training experience with an A1 assessor qualification, or equivalent.

All our instructors will drive or guard a variety of routes and traction types throughout the UK as well as developing training materials, delivering training and assessing so they stay up to date, in touch and competent.

As one of our team, you will need a professional, can do approach and the skills needed to help develop innovative training materials; deliver practical and classroom training; consistent and fair assessments; and provide students and clients with outstanding customer service.

SLC Operations and The Rail Academy are located in Kings Norton, Birmingham but jobs could be anywhere in the UK so you must be able and willing to travel. Where possible home working is also supported. We are an equal opportunities employer with annual contract terms applied pro rata.

Full Time Drivers/Driver Instructor salaries start at £62,000 per annum depending on location and offer a competitive benefits package. Full Time Drivers work an average of 35 hours over 4 days per week.

Job Specifications

 About Us:

SLC Operations Ltd is a licensed Train Operating Company, based in Kings Norton, Birmingham.  We have two key workstreams in our business.  The first is to hire out qualified train drivers and/or plan and manage non-passenger rail operations.  The second is to deliver specialist training for train drivers and other safety critical personnel.

 We are:

  • A licensed train operator
  • An approved train driver training and examination centre
  • A RISQS approved provider of Sentinel PTS training and Sponsorship
  • Approved to delivery End Point Assessments for Apprentice Train Drivers (Level 3)

Working Arrangements:

Home working may be possible where the environment is appropriate and approved by the line manager.  A maximum of 2 days per week in any one week.  However, you will need to live within daily travelling distance of the offices at Kings Norton.

Monday to Thursday 09.00 to 16.00 with 45 mins per day lunch break.

The qualifying criteria and application process is:-

Administration Assistant

 Job Purpose:

To provide the Operations Support Manager and the Commercial team with assistance in Office Administration and Commercial activities, including the administration of safety and competence management databases.

Reporting to: Operations Support Manager, SLC Operations Ltd.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Supporting the Commercial Manager and team activities.  This will include office administration, reception duties, meeting support, ordering stationary and uniforms, updating websites, maintaining customer databases, updating social media channels, supporting administration of contracts.

Skills & Experience:

  • Previous work experience is preferred, but for a mature candidate not essential
  • Excellent presentation
  • Clear spoken and written English
  • Numerate and with sound maths and arithmetic
  • Confidence to work in an open plan, busy office as part of a lively team
  • Organised approach
  • Previous experience of Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Word and Excel

Essential Qualifications:

Minimum GCSE Maths and English Grade B or 6 and above (or equivalent)

Successful candidates will be based on an operational rail depot and must therefore pass a medical before they will be appointed.

Operations Assistant (two positions available)

Job Purpose:

Provide the Operations Assurance Manager and Operations team with administrative and practical assistance in day to day rail operations and training provision including administration, logistics, resourcing and competence management activities.  This post will also be responsible for ensuring key databases related to personnel safety are kept accurate and up to date.

The candidate will be trained and qualified in railway Sentinel Personal Track Safety (PTS) which provides an essential and transferable UK rail qualification.  Depending on the candidate, they may also have the opportunity to be trained as a railway Guard.

Finance Assistant

Job Purpose:

Provide the Finance Manager with assistance in all day to day accounting and financial administration activities.

Reporting to: Finance Manager, SLC Operations Ltd.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Supporting the Finance Manager by recording and processing company cost and revenue transactions.  This will include raising purchase orders, creating expenditure logs, raising invoices, credit control, processing expense claims and providing reports as necessary.

  • Previous work experience is preferred but for a mature candidate not essential
  • Excellent presentation
  • Clear spoken and written English
  • Numerate and with sound maths and arithmetic
  • Confidence to work in an open plan, busy office as part of a lively team
